About

JJS_about.png

My mother once told all of her friends I was ‘in charge of designing torpedos.’ In reality, I was working closely with scientists who used giant yellow sea gliders that measured the health of our oceans to design programs and web experiences that communicated their findings with the world. I have spent over a decade working to connect people through design, and most recently, have been educating young designers in the (digital) classroom and leading in-house creative teams.

I strive to create fearless and founded experiences through a process that is rooted in due diligence and collaboration. I believe brands and products need to have the ability to touch people emotionally and help them discover things about themselves they never knew existed.

When I am not working you can find me and my dog wearing matching hoodies trying to see what foods can be pickled

Testimonies

“I worked together with Jack at the University of Washington on a suite of digital products within the College of the Environment. Jack has an extremely sharp creative mind and brings thoughtful, well-articulated ideas to the table. I was consistently impressed with his ability to present creative ideas to all members of a product team in a clear and concise way. Jack's unique skill as a excellent designer paired with his ability to communicate those ideas so well were a huge asset to our team and digital products.”

Cole Bessee,
Senior Software Engineer at Critigen

“Jack is a skilled designer and a brilliant professor. While I was his student, he made sure to challenge each individual in the classroom - constantly motivating us to form a narrative with, and through, our designs. His ability to provide objective critiques in a positive and professional manner was even more appreciated when we became colleagues at PitchBook. As a designer in another department, I always appreciated Jack for going out of his way to ensure smooth collaboration between teams. When Jack enters into a room, you know it's going to be a fun and productive time!”

Michelle Lee (They/Them),
Product Designer at PitchBook Data

"Jack is an amazing collaborator. He has been teaching with us at SPU for several years now and I really appreciate his direction and input on academic pedagogy. He is wise, insightful, and creative in his approach to student learning. He is well respected by the students and gets favorable reviews. Jack is clear in his instruction, rigorous in his approach, and promotes excellence in design for himself and his students."
